Who We Are

Drawing members from Livonia and surrounding communities, the chorus represents almost all walks of life, ages and levels of musical training.

We are bound together by a common love for music and find great satisfaction in bringing enjoyment and cheer to the community through song.

Our chorus performs two major performances each year, plus some additional appearances at various events in and around the community.

We also sponsor annual music scholarships to help develop and promote the musical talent of local students, a privilege made possible with the generous support of chorus members and community friends and patrons.

The desire to contribute something of value to the life of the community, the desire to enrich our musical talents, and the sheer enjoyment of singing are the qualities that make the Livonia Civic Chorus what it is today.

A Brief History

The Livonia Civic Chorus was founded in 1965 by a group of men and women from a local church choir who started gathering at each other’s homes to sing for enjoyment. Then someone had the idea to ask for financial support. The City of Livonia’s Department of Parks and Recreation had been looking to sponsor a mixed community chorus and agreed to provide a small grant for music and other costs. The group was formally chartered as Livonia Civic Chorus and began presenting musical programs to the residents of the community on a regular schedule.

One current member, Hank Kanar, is one of the LCC’s Charter Members. To read his full recounting of the first forty years of our chorus’ history click here.

Our Shows

The chorus prepares for two main performances a year. We begin each season in September, preparing first for a winter holiday show to be performed in December.

In mid-January we begin rehearsals anew, with our work now focused on our spring musical show which we take to the stage in May.

Our repertoire covers a wide variety of musical selections and styles, blending both new and traditional music to ensure we offer a little something for everyone. Moreover, from its very beginning, the members of the Livonia Civic Chorus decided they wanted to do more than just stand on risers and sing. We have built a reputation of delighting audiences with entertaining, full-scale musical productions that often feature choreography, novelty numbers, costumes and skits.

These shows prove to be a whole lot of fun for both the chorus and the audience. See the fun we have in rehearsal and previous shows by visiting our photo gallery.
